Langport

The Town

As our property search company can tell you, Langport lies at the heart of the picturesque Somerset Levels. Our real estate buyers agent can confirm it’s a thriving local hub. When busy, the main street can be narrow, although our Recoco buying agent can show you open moorland is easily accessible behind the buildings. Ask your property buying agent about Huish Episcopi, on the town’s outskirts, or check with your boutique buying agents about the two parts of town: by the river and on the hill. And don’t forget to get your Recoco property finder to bring you up-to-date with the free newspaper, The Leveller, with its unique take on local happenings since 2010.

Transport

Langport hasn’t had a railway station since the 1960s; our property buying agent can tell you Bridgwater and Yeovil Pen Mill are the nearest, just over 10 and 11.3 miles away. Langport lies on the A378 and the A372, with the closest motorway link at M5 J23 - check road links with your property search company. Or ask your buyers agents about buses from Yeovil and Taunton (no Sunday service).

History

If you enjoy a little history with your property search, your boutique buying agents might hint it’s possible, even probable, that Langport was significant in the Roman eras. It was certainly important to King Alfred – nearby Somerton was a former royal centre. The oldest part of town is the Hill: our property buying agent can show you stunning views over the nearby countryside.

Your Recoco property finder can outline a potted history, from medieval cloth making, a pivotal English Civil War battle on 10th July 1645, and importance as a port from the late 1700s to the early 1800s.

Our real estate buyers agent can show you several appealing historic buildings. Your boutique buying agent might show you the Grade I listed Hanging Chapel on The Hill or All Saints Church, on the skyline. If your property search includes Bow Street, your Recoco buying agent might draw your attention to the leaning buildings - a Roman causeway runs underneath.)

Many buildings have had multiple uses – just ask our real estate buyers agent. Our independent buying agents can confirm, for instance, the 18h century Town Hall housed the county court, cells, and the town’s horse-drawn fire engine. Your Recoco buying agent might also tell you about the World War Two US military prison located in Langport.

Education

For any property buyer needing to consider educational opportunities in their property search, buyers agents may mention the secondary school, 11-18 Huish Episcopi Academy and the Huish Episcopi Primary School near the town centre. Outside the village, our property buying agent can help locate nearby independent schools like Millfield.

Leisure and Events

Langport has a post office, pharmacy, medical centre, and library. Our property search company can point you towards supermarkets, independent craft workshops, pleasant picnic areas by the river and walks in the town itself, and the attractive Walter Bagehot Town Garden.

Buyers agents might describe the recent upgrade to part of the riverside, with improved disabled access and picnic facilities. Your boutique buying agents might also mention the long distance Parrett Trail, just two miles away and popular with walkers. Any property buyer who enjoys hiking can walk to the ruined Benedictine abbey at Muchelney, or there are bike trails and horse drawn tours depending on season.

Ask your independent buying agents about the cattle and horse fair every September. Your Recoco property finder can tell any retail-loving property buyer about Shakspeare Glass, Langport Clocks, Langport Reclamation, Lafleure, gift shops Florin and Eustace and Arthur, Smith and Evans Somerset Wine, Langport Vintage Market, or the Langport Stores – check the window for the old delivery bike that sometimes makes a guest appearance.

Celebrity Connections

Long-serving nineteenth century editor of the Economist, Walter Bagehot, hails from Langport. (The name’s pronounced “Badg-itt”.) As our independent buying agents can tell you, his family was very important in the village, along with the Stuckeys. More recently, actress and singer Marti Webb retired to Langport.

Foodies’ Corner

Somerset is known for its excellent local cider, traditional and fruit – give the Bere Cider Company or Harrys Cider a try. Call in at the Angel Community Café during opening hours, sip a delicate brew at Art Tea Zen, enjoy filling fare at Kitchen at the Wharf, or head to the Rose and Crown at Huish Episcopi, an inn since the 1650s.

Fun Fact

The Hanging Wall gets its name as it hangs over the road – no one was ever hanged here.
