Wedmore
The Town
If you’re contemplating a property search of the Somerset Levels, ask our Recoco property finder about Wedmore. As our property search company can tell you, it lies in between the River Brue and the River Axe, around 4 miles south of Cheddar. Wells and Glastonbury are both around 7 miles away. Ask your property buying agent about the three main villages, Blackford, Theale, and Wedmore. The population of the parish of Wedmore is around 3,318 – check with our boutique buying agents for the latest figures.
Transport
With the exception of school services, our real estate buyers agent can confirm there is very little public transport to Wedmore. Ask your Recoco property finder about nearest railway stations: Highbridge and Burnham on Sea, 7 miles away, followed by Weston-super-Mare, Bridgwater, and Taunton. There are daily bus services from and to Wells and Burnham-on-Sea, Glastonbury, and Shipham (via Cheddar).
Wedmore lies on the B3139, which links to the A38. Our property buying agent can confirm the nearest airport is at Bristol, 25 miles away by car. A Wedmore Community bus also runs - check with your independent buying agents about the destination of the day.
History
Our real estate buyers agent can tell you that archaeologists have found some evidence of Iron Age habitation nearby, as well as several Roman sites, Saxon coins, and a Saxon ring. As our buyers agents can outline, in the Middle Ages, Wedmore hosted weekly markets and a much larger annual event. And our boutique buying agents will be able to confirm that the 1086 Domesday Book entry reveals the village belonged to the Bishop of Wells at the time.
Ask your Recoco buying agent about the 17th century hospital, built by Dr. John Westover. It’s thought to have been the first private lunatic asylum in England, and the doctor is believed to have treated his patients with compassion.
Get your Recoco property finder to tell you about the other buildings in the village, dating from the 1400s to Georgian times.
Education
If educational opportunities are important to your property search, check with your Recoco buying agent about Hugh Sexey Middle School, part of the Wessex Learning Trust, which incorporates eight schools in the Cheddar Valley, taking pupils from 2 to 19. The Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar provides education from Year 9. Or ask your independent buying agents about the numerous independent and preparatory schools nearby, including Wells Cathedral School, Ashbrooke House, Millfield, and Sidcot.
Leisure and Events
The village has two active churches: the mainly 15th century Church of St Mary and the Grade II listed 19th century Wedmore Methodist Church. The village has a pharmacy, medical and dental practice, village store and off-licence, traditional butcher’s, and other local shops.
If you’re a property buyer who enjoys sport, ask your real estate buyers agent about the facilities at Wedmore Playing Fields for bowls, cricket, football, and tennis. Ask your buyers agents about the summer street fair, as well as the Harvest Home and village parade each autumn, while at Christmas there is the Wedmore by Lamplight fair. Your Recoco buying agent can also tell you about the town’s Real Ale Festival, Arts Festival and other events at Wedmore Village Hall. And as our boutique buying agents can tell you, a specially constructed marquee also often hosts classical operatic events.
For a property buyer who enjoys science, the Tealham and Tadham Moors will appeal. This Site of Special Scientific Interest forms part of the wide-ranging grazing marsh and ditch systems of the Somerset Levels. The climate is generally warmer and wetter than most of the British Isles, but our property search company may alert you to the winter floods which typically occur annually if the River Brue regularly bursts its banks.
Celebrities’ Corner
If you’re a property buyer who enjoys knowing about famous names associated with a location, you might be interested to know that King Alfred (later the Great) signed a landmark peace treaty with Viking King Guthrum the Old here.
Foodies’ Corner
If you find yourself a little peckish on your property search, check with your buyers agents about the current options, including Indian cuisine at Table 8, Pumpkin Delicatessen and Cafe, village pub The Swan, or Nanny Ida’s tearoom.
Fun Fact
While most people have heard of the Turner Prize, locally, as our property buying agent can tell you, the Turnip Prize is much more important. Ask our property search company about this annual competition which takes place at the New Inn. It celebrates the absolute worst of bad modern art.
