Sustainable Energy

World and local events have proven to have a distinct impact on the property market over the years, notably in the economic sector where uncertainty creates a nervous market. In the last ten years outstanding influences have come from Brexit, Covid and now in 2026 the Middle East war impacting oil and fuel prices.  This aside from UK economics and government dictates. 

Most rural areas rely on oil as a means of heating and are dependent on cars so petrol and diesel are a large part of a families’ monthly budget. 

As ever there is always a silver lining and in this case the drive for eco sustainable heating will get a boost. The government are dictating all new houses will have to have solar panels and ideally ground or air source heat pumps diminishing the call on oil and fossil fuels. Whilst heat pumps are not necessarily fully effective in older houses as the construction needs to be compatible for the full benefit they can back up conventional systems. 

Aside from full blown housing developments there are a growing number of individual houses and often Class Q barn conversions that abide by the sustainable remit. I have seen a number of Victorian houses meeting the Passiv Haus rules so combining character with modern efficiency. 

Change is always hard to swallow so when it’s forced upon us we gradually accept it and then realise it was all for the greater good – our pockets and the planet itself.  Whilst fuel gets ever more expensive we will inevitably look to address alternative systems and embrace technology.

It is, I believe, our duty to ensure the security of the planet for future generations and restrain the ever- increasing extraction of natural resources that surely are limited. Finding a balance to keep pace with the technological world and the pace at which it runs and maintaining a sense of reality is hard but every person has choices they can make to ensure our children are not left in a depleted world.   

The suffering of people caught in the midst of any controversy and war is unimaginable so it’s a small price for us to address costs and practicalities when living in a corner of the world where the simple things in life can still be enjoyed.   

Adjustments in daily lives due to economic pressure whilst retaining the homes we enjoy should never be taken for granted – a safe, secure environment for ourselves and family: “It’s all about coming home”.
